Pincher Creek

Today's Google Earth File: http://tomerceg.googlepages.com/PincherCreek.kmz

Greetings from Pincher Creek, supposedly the windiest place in Canada. Sometimes that can be a good thing, like if the wind is blowing in the right direction. Today, well, not so much.

We camped last night in the town of Longview. Clint Eastwood filmed Unforgiven here. The locals only kept one portion of the set -- The toilet where Clint Eastwood shot a bad guy while he was on the throne. Brokeback Mountain and several other movies have also been filmed in this area. My son Steven is in Navy boot camp. His one request was that I have a Budweiser for him on the 4th of July, so I wandered into town and found the lone liquor store. The owner didn't want to break up a 6-pack. When I explained why I only needed one he went into the back room and found me a single.

After descending out of the high mountains yesterday we found ourselves in prairie land. This is the home of Alberta beef. It's also very desolate. We passed a sign that said "no services -- 130 km". For the metrically challenged that's a "long way".

The wind was just relentless today. We rode in a paceline for the entire 85 miles today. Here's our group of 6 just grinding it out. You'll notice Frank, the rider in back. If I had to spend the entire day staring at another rider's back wheel I'm glad it was Frank I was following. 6'4" of rider makes for a nice wind screen.

This is beautiful country in it's own right. It doesn't have quite the granduer of the big mountains, but it's lush and green and actually quite nice. I'd like it better if someone had turned off the fan at some point though.

Tomorrow he head down into the lower 48 for a brief ride through Montana. We're all double checking that we have our passports with us!

  3. God bless the Navy. And 6'4" cyclists. Tuck in and head for the mountains!
